USA Shipping Information: Duties, Tariffs & Customs for Yarn Orders

We know this new cross-border process asks more of you than before, and we want to acknowledge that directly. These added steps, fees, and uncertainties are inconvenient and unexpected — and we are truly grateful that you continue to choose us through this period of transition.

Recent changes to US customs requirements and reciprocal tariffs affecting yarn from South Africa mean that shipping to the United States now involves additional steps and potential duties/taxes for customers.

What happens to your parcel when shipping yarn to the USA

  • We ship from Canada via Purolator.
  • When your parcel reaches the US border, Purolator transfers it to UPS.
  • UPS generates a new tracking number (beginning with 1Z…) and emails it to you.

What duties, taxes, and fees to expect on yarn imports

UPS may request payment for:

  • duty on the yarn
  • applicable state and local taxes (similar to paying sales tax at a local shop)
  • a +/- 30% reciprocal tariff because the yarn originates in South Africa

These costs vary based on your state and the value of the order.

How and when to pay customs fees for USA yarn orders

We highly recommend paying online using the UPS tracking page once you receive the notification email.

Paying online:

  • avoids delays at delivery
  • avoids a $12 in-person collection fee
  • does not require you to be home when the parcel arrives

Paying at delivery:

  • you must be present in person
  • payment must be by cheque
  • UPS adds the $12 service fee

If you don't see the UPS tracking email

You can:

  • check for an email from UPS email when the parcel crosses the border
  • use the UPS tracking number on the delivery notice left at your door
  • call Purolator at 1-844-333-3792 for assistance, they will quickly provide the UPS tracking number associated to your shipment
  • submit an inquiry through the Purolator International tracking page's "Contact Us" link (leave this option for last, it is the slowest option)
  • send us an email and we will also be able to help you

Why we aren't hiding these fees in our prices

While some businesses are folding these charges into their pricing and paying on customers' behalf, transparency is a core value for us. We hope that when trade relations normalize, these added costs will soon fall away.
